This collection of black and white photographs is inspired by my study of Zen and contemporary scientific research demonstrating that spending time viewing nature’s fractal patterns triggers restorative alpha waves in the brain that increases a person’s sense of serenity in a stressful world.
My creative process involved thinking about how to remove the background to force myself as a viewer to remain fully present in the moment and fully engrossed in the beauty that was right before me. To achieve the sense of wonder I placed a piece of black velvet behind botanical samples to remove the temptation to look beyond what was right there in front of me.
This process has revealed the beauty of light in the forest as well as harmony of natures self repeating patterns.
