Kansha

Image of a leaf cluster and thorns.
Closeup of yellow leaves and thorns. Spokane River, December, 2016

I often walk along the river and practice photography as a form of meditation.

I made this image on a rainy morning walk along the Spokane River. I was experimenting with shooting wide open at f/1.4 as a way to loosen up my precision and find more emotion in my work. This image became the start of a new collection of work that I am calling the Kansha Collection.

Kansha is a Japanese term for gratitude. In Japanese cooking it is the gratitude for the ingredients that are transformed into something wonderful.  I see this as a means of appreciating all the little elements in our day to world that are transformed into our life.
