Sticking Out

I made this image in the journalism classroom I was teaching in today. I was demonstrating how you can find interesting images in any environment if you go back to the basics of looking for design elements. I saw this stack of old newspapers and decided to make a photograph of the repeating horizontal lines. There was one page sticking out and I think this image is really about the challenge of how to make images that stand out in a pile of non stop photographs being posted on social media sites. It is difficult to gain an audience in the modern world which is why creativity is so important. It is the only tool we have to stand out in a cluttered world.

  • It never fails. If I am stuck in a creative rut I can always return to the basics and reinvestigate design elements and principles. Today I was thinking about texture and emotion and decided to grab a piece of paper towel and scrunch it up in a fit of enthusiastic emotion. I dropped the wad
