After The Rain

Posted on February 9, 2023February 9, 2023

This image is one of the many I make using my cell phone to visually journal the things I take note of in the course of life without stopping beyond a momentary pause.

I made this image in a parking light after the rain. When I got home and looked more closely I was excited and terrified by the beautiful color found in oil spills that occur under parked cars. The rain lifts up and seems to separate the viscosity into a rainbow of colors.

One of the things I like about using a cell phone camera is that they can do such excellent macro photography with extensive depth of field.

As I look at these images I am guessing there was a combination of anti-freeze fluid and oil. It is a wonderful study of color harmonies with the analogous colors of yellow, green, and cyan next to the complimentary colors of blue and yellow outlined in orange and purple. It is as if a technological comet was passing by.

I wonder if abstract painters aren’t really avoiding realism but instead are focused in tightly on the details of life.
