Checkerboard Tavern

Posted on December 4, 2017

Image of a man sitting at the Checkboard tavern.

Image of two men laughing in a bar.
Two friends share a laugh at the Checkerboard Tavern.

I made these images at a dive bar on Sprague avenue in Spokane Washington. The Checkerboard Tavern has the oldest continuous liquor license in the state and reminds me of the bars that my boxing coach would take me in when I was only 11. When you first looked at these guys they looked tough but I am comfortable in these situations and as soon as I told them the story of being a kid going into bars like this they immediately opened up and let me make photographs of them.
