Total Eclipse

Posted on December 14, 2017
Image of the 2017 Solar Eclipse and a bluebird sitting on the top of a juniper tree.
A blue bird sits on a branch located in the Malheur national forest during the August 21st, 2017 total eclipse.

I went to the Malheur national forest with some photographer friends to camp and photograph the solar eclipse in totality. The photograph cannot do justice to the experience of witnessing totality and how awe inspiring it was. Right before the start of the eclipse I had been photographing bluebirds who were there by the hundreds. I made this image of a single bird at the top of a Juniper tree just prior to taking the lens off my camera and mounting it to a telescope. Later when I was thinking about the overall experience I realized that the small bird juxtaposed against the eclipse came closest to how small I felt in comparison to the cosmos.
