Stealing Fire

Posted on January 24, 2023January 24, 2023

During long cold winter nights

I dream of dancing with you in summer

While I sit by the fire with gratitude

For Prometheus

Sometimes words come before images and other times the images inspire the words. As I was looking for an image yesterday I came across a series of photographs I made of two drawing mannequins that used to sit in the window seal of my studio.

I had covered the window with red gel to turn the room into a darkroom for wet plate photography. It was interesting to have a space where people could watch me work in my darkroom from the hallway. It reminded me of when I visited the biosphere in Arizona many years ago. We watched as the inhabitants went about their day cultivating plants for their food in an attempt to live sustainably in an inhospitable landscape.

As I traveled through the archives I came across these images of my wife from when we began dating. This was the moment I knew I had fallen in love with her. During the winter we take sanctuary sitting by a fire drinking wine.

The combination of these two images with the snowy landscape outside led me towards the poetic words for today.

Happy Winter!

  • I often get asked if I prefer film or digital for photographs. The answer is that I prefer B&W analog film to digital but when it comes to color I much prefer making digital photographs. I never enjoyed the lengthy 20 minute process to just make one test print and then having to go
