Americana Color Grade

Posted on February 5, 2025February 5, 2025
Before and after image of a barn that I have ridden by on my motorcycle many times.

Today I was giving a demo on color correction and color grading and chose to make this cell phone photo as an example. After neutralizing the color balance via a curves adjustment layer I decided to review the individual color layers and found that the blue channel made the grass really stand out and look far more realistic in my opinion.

By pasting a copy of the blue channel on top of the original color image I was able to set the layer blend mode to LUMINOSITY and have it darken the grass and make the cars really stand out. I didn’t want the effect on the sky so I applied a layer mask where I pasted in the blue channel but then inverted it to make the sky dark which would hide the effect and keep my original blue sky.

The last step was to bring out a little red saturation on the barn!

  • About the photos Last June my friend Shane and I were on one of the coldest motorcycle trips ever. I had never seen Shane get so cold. I thought he was going to burn his hands on the exhaust pipe as he tried to warm them up. I tried watching the radar for some place to go to get away
