Cinematic Portraits

Posted on May 14, 2025May 23, 2025

Yesterday morning I gave a demonstration about how to be creative in the studio using cinema lighting and a projected background. The magic of working in the studio is that I can create a night scene in the earliest hour of the morning if I choose too!

I created this urban night scene series of portraits of Blaze by projecting a cityscape scene and using LED cinema lights set to two different color temperatures. With my camera set to a white balance of 5600 Kelvin, the light that was set to 3200K shows up warm on his hair like an incandescent street lamp or a car headlight.

In my lesson for the day I tried to stress the importance of shadows, the use of split color grade light sources, and the ability to be creative by choosing backgrounds, wardrobe, and props. I can bring the whole world into my studio space.

I like the color version of these images but I am ultimately a B&W photographer at heart. I often deliver color images to clients but for my personal work I think I am most influenced by the noir style of cinematography.
