Notan: An Arrangement of Shapes

Posted on

One of the concepts I try to incorporate in my photography is the idea of NOTAN. It is a way of seeing the world as being filled with the simplified design elements of point, line, shape, form, pattern, texture, movement, space, and color. I usually save color for last because it is the design element that overwhelms our ability to see the arrangement of the other elements. Color relates to emotions whereas all the other elements are an exploration of dimension and space.

Landscape painter Mitchell Albala does a fantastic job of teaching about notan studies. Be sure to check out his wonderful artwork here!
