Yesterday I had an opportunity to meet the architect Paul Neuhaus from HGA in Minneapolis who designed the new fine art and photography building at Spokane Falls Community College. He brought NYC commercial photographer Albert Vecerka. I had met Paul during the early stages of design. I was extremely impressed by how he incorporated all the goals of the project into a thoughtful design that has to serve so many art mediums and their specialized technology. The building is nothing short of spectacular.
Paul had asked if our program could stage a photo shoot in the studio that incorporated a motorcycle so I brought one of mine to campus. The timing was challenging for this photo session because almost all of our program lighting equipment is off campus this week for our annual location shoot where we take all our classes downtown and set up in the historic Masonic Temple building in the heart of Spokane.

I had led a field trip in the morning doing street photography and then rode my Tiger to campus to stage this photo shoot. I helped his assistant Erin recruit students on campus to stand in as models on set. It was fascinating to see how Albert staged the students and props in a deep space. We used my laptop to shoot this image with a tethered capture that was broadast to a large television screen in the studio that I use to give demos with. The final image incorporates me acting like I’m giving a demonstration about lighting techniques to six students in the studio. I can’t wait to see the final image. In the meantime I always enjoy an opportunity to post an image of one of my motorcycles!
