Photogram Experiments

Posted on October 2, 2026October 2, 2026

Creativity is all about problem solving. Yesterday as I was working in the darkroom I ran into the problem of not having large enough paper to fit the entire iris on a single sheet of paper. I decided to use multiple sheets of 5×7 to create my photograms.

Working on photograms has inspired me to look further into abstract art and I spent a few hours looking at the work of Kazimir Malevich and his art movement Suprematism.

To Malevich, abstract shapes and lines floating in a blank field represented the purest expression of human emotion.

From looking at his work and philosophy I am thinking about harmonic armatures and dynamic symmetry and how the geometric patterns of composition are the foundation of all expressive emotion in artwork. I think I will spending a lot more time working on photograms to learn more about abstract expressionism.
