The Power of Film Editing

Posted on February 3, 2025February 3, 2025

I edited this short interview of Michael as a editing demo in my PHOTO 237 Documentary Storytelling class. The students were asked to film an interview with a class mate and I took the raw footage and cut it with some stock b-roll footage from pexels.com.

I was demonstrating how I can add impact to the spoken word by introducing pauses between words to allow the listener to think about what was just said. Mike had responded to the questions Brady asked in kind of a machine gun continuous answer and I would cut on the word and create gaps in the timeline.

I found some stock footage that Mike told me was very similar to what he remembered. I think it worked well to cover up the blank spots.

Taking time to listen and to reflect upon the meaningful life experiences people have had is powerful.
