I observed this man practicing marshal arts with a metal rod up on top of a rock that overlooks the Spokane River. I approached him quietly and waited for him to finish. I asked if I could make a portrait of him and he agreed. He said his name was Terrence “Batman” and that he was a 26 year old homeless vet from New York who had already been divorced twice. He had a charismatic smile and said that he tried to patrol the bike trail to keep people safe and that he had adopted the name “batman” because he was the “token batman” in Spokane. He didn’t want to smile for the portrait but he was generous with his time.
