Last class my students expressed a desire to learn more about macro photography and basic exposure controls. So today I took them outside and made multiple series of equivalent exposures based upon the sunny 16 rule and only changing the ISO and shutter speed. After that we worked on making equivalent exposures using different apertures to control for depth of field and finally a series of images with equivalent exposures based upon shutter speed to record action.
I brought in a macro lens and found this small fossil called an ammonite sitting on the podium. It gave me an opportunity to explain the difference between macro and micro photography. I didn’t use a tripod and it was under low light but I was satisfied with the exercise.
