Postcard from Spokane

Posted on May 28, 2026May 28, 2026

I have been inspired by the work of a New York filmmaker who shoots montage videos of the city on 16mm film. I challenged myself to spend a day downtown and to try to see Spokane as a big urban city. I shot everything handheld with my Sony RX100 VII and color graded it to resemble 1970’s analog film. I am doing this as a means of practicing before I go to the expense of filming with my Nikon Super8mm movie camera.

When I finished editing this piece at midnight last night I realized that I had been guided by the music video of Marvin Gaye performing What’s Going On? that featured film clips from Chicago. I also think I was influenced by childhood memories of watching the Mary Tyler Moore show. As a photographer I tried to see my city from the eyes of an outsider.

I hope you enjoy it!
