I have been teaching a workshop on Nature and Landscape photography this spring. I made this image during a field trip to Riverside State Park. I was demonstrating how I use a variable neutral density filter combined with a low ISO on my digital SLR to produce this image with a 30 second exposure. The sky had become dramatic as we headed towards a rainy night.
I think the blurred water is like my blurred memories of the past. Time smoothes over the rough spots and I am left with just the essence of moments and an awareness of how fast life passes.

I’m not sure I like the image because it isn’t particularly soothing but I enjoy the various textures from the hard shadows of basalt rock, the mottled light in the clouds, and the soft tones of the waves in the foreground. I don’t have to like it to appreciate it. I enjoyed the process of letting the camera show me the passage of time in a way I can never perceive it on my own.
I hope you have a great day!
Ira
