Yesterday was my wife Sarah’s birthday. She took the afternoon off and so I brought home lunch and we enjoyed the sunshine on our patio as we ate. Afterwards we ran some errands to finally get new kitchen countertops ordered for the remodel and we stopped by Northwest Seed and Pet to pick up some plants for the garden. I had lost almost all my ferns so we picked up a new one along with some phlox. By the time we left the store rush hour traffic had started on Division and there was no way I was going to make a left turn across that traffic so I ended up taking a right and taking the first left turn I could make at a signal. It turns out that left turn took us to the old Costco site that was now a huge AT HOME store. We decided to park and take a look at the store.
We explored the store and noticed a frame section and stopped to take a look because I have some prints that need frames. While I was there I noticed a lot of abstract wall art. I decided to take my cell phone out and capture some closeup detail images that I thought might make some nice textures to blend in with some of my photography. This morning I experimented by finding old photos on my cell phone using the keyword of FLOWERS. This image stood out to me because it had a very simple composition of a hummingbird on a poker plant against a plain white wall. I made this image in California while on a motorcycle trip.
After reviewing my texture images I chose one that emphasized the vertical movement of this composition. I think the colors also blended nicely with the hummingbird. The strong vertical proportion was inspired by my interest in asian scroll art.
It was a fun experiment that I will continue to work on.
Happy Friday!
